House Moving

Relocating A House To A New Location

Many people think of moving or relocating their home as consisting of schlepping furniture and belongings from one home to another.  But the real house moving entails taking a house from one physical location to another.  This kind of house moving grown in popularity of late and has had a positive impact in a number of ways.

The environmental impact alone is clear -- avoiding the waste that results from “tear-downs.”  Some historical buildings can be saved from the scrap heap by a strategic house move.  There are several house moving companies throughout the United States that specialize in just such a move.

Regardless of whether it’s a home in or around Philadelphia or New York or in a sleepy burg outside of Portland, Maine, a house move can preserve history and protect structural integrity.  House moving has grown considerably in Los Angeles, California as well.  All over the US house movers are moving not only homes but other historical landmarks such as schools, churches, town halls and more.

Many people who are willing to take on a house moving project can save a great deal of money in addition to owning a piece of history.  Though renovating a house like this is not without its challenges, those who have undertaken just such a thing have expressed little regrets.  Many of the people who have taken part in house rescuing are members of historical societies and do it as a labor of love.

The logistics of a house moving create some restrictions.  Almost without exception, the land to which you are going to have the house moved should be level.  An uneven surface presents engineering challenges that would either compromise the structural integrity of the home or prove too costly to overcome.

In many cases a new foundation must be poured to adequately shore up any weakness that may have existed prior to the move.  Many homes, even if there were set on a pier and post foundation or a foundation of another type, must have a new kind of support system on which to properly place the house in its new location.

Likewise, new pipes and plumbing and electrical wiring need to be set up in the house in its new setting.  Almost all cities in the US require that these aforementioned features meet building codes.  At any rate, most home owners that have taken part in a house move want these essential elements to be up to par so as to protect their investment.

Whatever the motivation is to take part in a move of this nature, it can be an exciting endeavor.  Certainly it isn’t for everyone, but if you have a passion for preserving history and living inside your own museum, this is the way to go.
