Long Distance Moving

Finding The Company, Pod, Or Movers To Take You Far

Any time you are faced with having to relocate, regardless of whether it’s due to a change in jobs, retirement or any other reason, planned or unplanned, your world can be thrown into temporary chaos.  When and if the time comes for this kind of change, you’ll need to deal with all the long distance moving challenges.  To best prepare, take a step back and do a little information gathering to help pave the way for the move.

You might give some thought to the different options you have available to you to help facilitate both the preparation and the actual move.  Much of what you decide will, in large part, be determined by how much you have to move and what kind of budgetary constraints you are under.

If your long distance moving needs are minimal, you might think about doing it yourself.  If you are vacating a small apartment or condominium, it’s reasonable to think about renting a truck and driving it yourself.  You might even get by with a simple trailer rental if your possessions are minimal.  U-Haul or Ryder, among other companies, have one-way truck and trailer rentals that accommodate moves to just about any major city in the US.  Just pack, rent, pack again, and go.

However, if what you are moving long distance can fill up a single family home, you’ll probably want to leave the moving headaches to someone else.  There are plenty of reputable moving companies that will load, ship, and unload at the new destination.  You can simply manage the project and avoid the grunt work.  Allied Van Lines and United Van Lines are just a couple of the highly thought of companies that essentially ship anywhere in the US and many parts of the world.  Call both of these companies for quotes to be able to make a complete cost analysis.

Another long distance moving option that has become quite popular of late are pods.  Pods are basically movable storage containers that are delivered to your residence.  You or somebody else can load up the pod and have it shipped to your new residence.  One of the advantages to this type of container is that you can have it stored for a period of time prior to having it delivered.  This gives you the opportunity to take a little time in making new living arrangements.  PODS and Door To Door Storage are two companies to consider.

Before you get started however, you should follow a few basic moving tips.  Get all your boxes before hand.  Look in the back of grocery stores, for example, for discarded boxes that will cost you nothing.  Take inventory of your belongings and eliminate the items that are only adding to the clutter.  Create separate boxes of items that are indispensable for everyday basic living.  Take these boxes with you personally.  When making a complete inventory of all the items that are being stored and/or shipped, keep detailed records so that you will be sure that what was sent matches what was delivered.

Consider the above as very basic long distance moving tips.  These items should get you on the way to creating your own list.  Start preparing and organizing now so as to minimize the moving chaos.
